Mission.

Our Mission is to maintain the highest level of public safety and customer service in the administration of zoning code enforcement. The Union Township office of Fayette County is responsible for providing residents of the township with a safe environment in which to live, work and raise families. This is accomplished by enforcing building and zoning codes to protect people from the hazards of unsafe construction and unwanted neighborly uses.

Location.

Drive a little less than an hour south from Columbus on US Rt. 62  or take US Rt. 35 east from Dayton; or from Cincinnati, you'll travel slightly over an hour north on US Rt. 22 and you'll  enter Union Township in Fayette County. Union Township surrounds the City of Washington and adjoins seven other townships in Fayette County.

In addition to being a day’s drive from over 140 million people, Union Township  is a low cost, central location which makes the community ideal for servicing the Midwest, Northeast, and Great Lakes regions.

History.

Union Township, like most of Ohio, has been continuously inhabited for the last 12 or 13 thousand years as attested to by the many prehistoric artifacts that are commonly found. The first European settlers arrived around 1800. At that time this area was part of the Virginia Military District. Many of the first settlers were given land for service in the Revolutionary war.

Today with a population of over 4000 and more than 125 businesses of various types, the township is a transition between the city and the rural with suburban areas intermixed with farms.

Elected Officials

The Ohio Revised Code provides that four non-partisan township offices are filled in the general election in the uneven numbered years. Terms are staggered with the fiscal officer and one trustee elected and two years later the other two trustees offices are filled.

The fiscal officer's primary duties consist of keeping the financial accounts of the  township. Trustees responsibilities vary from administrative to laborer. While of varied interests and backgrounds, the officials of Union Township all posses a desire to aid the people of the community.

Zoning Board of Appeals

The Zoning Board of Appeals has the authority to interpret the Township Zoning Resolution and Zoning Map, and when appropriate, to grant variances to the zoning code.  Additionally the Board hears applications for permitted conditional uses, determines and establishes the necessary conditions for that use. The Board's decisions can not be overridden by the Trustees and can only be contested in Common Pleas Court.

Zoning Commission

The Zoning Commission is called upon to produce the Zoning Resolution and Zoning Map, submit it to the County Planning Commission and then, with their recommendations, to the Trustees. All revisions and amendments  to the code and map are managed by the Zoning Commission.

The Floodplain Management Office is located within the Fayette County Building and Zoning Departments. The Floodplain Manager is Jay Myers.

The Floodplain Resolution was passed in May of 1995 to participate in the floodplain management. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a Federal program enabling property owners in "participating communities" to purchase insurance protection against losses from flooding. The insurance is designed to provide an insurance alternative to disaster assistance to meet the escalating costs of repairing damage to building and their contents caused by flood.

Participation in the NFIP is based on an agreement between local communities and the Federal Government that states that if a community will adopt and enforce a floodplain management ordinance or resolution to reduce future flood risks to new construction Special Flood Hazard Areas, the Federal Government will make flood insurance available within the community as
