Immunization Program

 

The Fayette County Health District provides childhood and adult immunizations.  Please call the Fayette County Health Department (740-335-5910) for an appointment or inquire information about the Care Van that provides immunizations throughout the county.

 

The cost for most immunizations through the Health District Childhood Immunization Clinic is $10.00 for the first vaccination and $5.00 for additional vaccinations given during the same visit.

 

Medicaid is accepted for many vaccines.

 

No person shall be denied vaccines that are provided by the Ohio Department of Health.

 

Childhood vaccines available: DTap, HIB, IPV (polio), Td, Tdap, MMR, Prevnar (Pneumonia), Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, Varicella (chickenpox) Rotavirus, Menactra and HPV (Gardisil).

 

* A parent or legal guardian must be present for the child to receive shots.

 

The health department also purchases additional recommended vaccines for both children and adults that may not be provided by the state.  The fee for these vaccines varies due to changing cost.  HPV (Gardisil), Td, Tdap, Menactra, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, and Zostavax (shingles).

 

No appointment necessary for the adults. All adult vaccines must be paid at time of service.

Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap) Booster

 

It is recommended that all teenagers and adults receive a Tdap booster shot to protect against diphtheria and pertussis.

 

It is also the first vaccine to protect teenagers and adults against pertussis.  History has shown that immunity to pertussis wanes over time even if you received the vaccine as a child.  As a result as many as one million teenagers and adults in the United States get pertussis each year.

 

The Tdap Booster is recommended for everyone ages 11 and up.  For those ages 11-18 the cost will be $10.  For those 19 years and older the cost will be $40.

HPV (Human papillomavirus) vaccine : Gardisil

 

Genital human papillomaviurs (HPV), a common sexually transmitted virus, can cause cervical cancer in women.  Cervical cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths among women around the world.  It can also cause genital wart and warts in the upper respiratory tract. 

 

The HPV vaccine (gardisil) protects against 4 major types of HPV.  HPV vaccine is routinely recommended for girls 11-12 years of age.  It is given as 3 dose series.  It is important for girls to get HPV vaccine before their first sexual contact. The vaccine is also recommended for girls and women 13-26 years of age who did not receive it when they were younger.

 

Shingles Vaccines

 

Shingles is a painful skin rash caused by the same virus that causes Chicken Pox, and anyone who has the Chickenpox may get Shingles.  It is far more common in people 50 and older, and in people whose immune system weakened because of a disease.

 

The Zoster (Shingles) Vaccine is recommended for all people 60 years of age and older.  It is a onetime cost of $155. (The fee for this vaccine may vary due to changing cost.

 

Meningococcal Vaccine

Menactra (Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine, MCV4) can prevent 4 types of meningococcol disease.  Meningitis is an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.  A dose of MCV4 is recommended for children and adolescents 11 through 18 years.  The meningoccoal vaccine is also recommended for college freshmen living in dormitories, anyone who has a damaged spleen or whose spleen has been removed, and people who might have been exposed to meningitis during an outbreak.

Vaccines are recommended to protect travelers from illnesses present in other parts of the world and to prevent the importation of infectious diseases across international borders.  Which vaccinations you need depends on number of factors including your destination, whether you will be spending time in rural areas, the season of the year you are traveling, your age, health status and previous immunizations.
